WCA Hospital has received CEO Cancer Gold Standard Employer for 2014 re-accreditation honors, recognizing the hospital’s commitment to taking concrete actions to reduce the cancer risk of employees and their families through screenings, early detection and healthy changes in lifestyle. The CEO Cancer Gold Standard is an initiative designed to combat cancer in the workplace.
WCA’s Gold Standard accreditation represents a milestone for WCA Hospital. As a Gold Standard organization, the accreditation represents a gold standard of leadership and demonstrates how employers can play an active and meaningful role in reducing cancer risk and improving the overall health of their employees and family members.
“As a Gold Standard employer, WCA Hospital is sending out a strong message to their employees that they care about their health each and every day,” said Dr. Martin J. Murphy, chief executive officer for the CEO Roundtable on Cancer. “It is because of WCA’s leadership that their employees and their families can continue to celebrate their employer’s keen interest in their health and well-being. We congratulate WCA on its continuing efforts to meet this gold standard of excellence in cancer prevention, early detection and quality cancer care.”
The CEO Cancer Gold Standard calls for companies to evaluate their health benefits and corporate culture and take extensive, concrete actions in five key areas of health and wellness to fight cancer in the workplace. To earn Gold Standard accreditation, a company must establish programs to reduce cancer risk by discouraging tobacco use; encouraging physical activity; promoting healthy diet and nutrition; detecting cancer at its earliest stages; and providing access to quality care, including participation in clinical trials.
According to Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital president and chief executive officer, the CEO Cancer Gold Standard accreditation recognizes WCA’s dedication in developing and implementing health and wellness initiatives aimed at maintaining a corporate culture that fosters healthy lifestyles and reduces the risk of cancer.
“We are proud to be awarded re-accreditation honors in our continuing efforts to meet the standard of cancer excellence,” Wright said. “As an organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of those we serve, it is extremely important that we educate our employees and their family members about cancer risks and provide them with the necessary tools that encourage healthy lifestyle behaviors and provide access to high-quality treatment in the fight against cancer.”
The CEO Cancer Gold Standard has recently been enhanced to place more emphasis on prevention, recognizing that there are numerous things that an employer can do to lower the risk of a cancer diagnosis.
With ongoing commitments from employers to enable employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to be screened appropriately for certain cancers and to provide access to state-of-the-science cancer treatment, employers are making a difference in the lives of their staff and families.
“It is up to each employee to accept responsibility for their own health, but the tools we provide to our employees help facility good health decisions that result in healthier lifestyles for our staff and their families,” adds Toni DeAngelo, R.N., WCA Hospital Community Health and Wellness director who coordinates the wellness activities for WCA Hospital.
