Author Tom Filsinger To Sign New Book
LAKEWOOD – Author Tom Filsinger will be signing his new book “Shadows on the Road” at Off the Beaten Path on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.
Filsinger, a game creator, psychology professor and author, traveled by car from New York to Los Angeles in 2011 to pursue his dream of seeing his fictional creations adapted for movies and television. During his two-month travels he kept a journal chronicling his adventures in Hollywood and across America.
“Shadows on the Road” is a book about pursuing Hollywood dreams while navigating existential shadows on the road of life. The author muses, ala Jack Kerouac, about philosophy, religion and spiritual values.
The stories in the book include a visit to the mansion of a Hollywood mogul, a near arrest for a stolen car in Utah and a mysterious spiritual quest to Sacramento.
The author describes his visits with celebrity friends in Los Angeles such as Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee and television actress Julie Newmar, depicting a rarely seen human side of these iconic figures.
Throughout the book Filsinger utilizes Carl Jung’s trickster motif as an allegory for the wandering nature of the traveler and the spiritual wanderlust in all of us. The title of the book is a nod to Jack Kerouac’s classic, “On the Road.”
“The book is written as a series of vignettes,” said Filsinger. “It’s my story, but also the stories of others I met during my travels. There’s the Laguna Beach Wanderer, the Despondent Woman, and the Basketball Court Con Man, among others. The underlying themes are spiritual searching and alienation, but not in a negative way. It’s a celebration of wandering.”
Filsinger’s first book, “The Dark Menace of the Universe,” is a memoir on creativity. It is one of the highest rated books at Amazon and has gone into a second printing.
Reviewer Connie A. Von Leitner, host of the Global Transformation Show, said: “‘Shadows on the Road’ is a must-read for everyone. It’s full of spontaneous adventure and people will relate to the journey.”
Off the Beaten Path is located at 28 Chautauqua Ave. in Lakewood.
