Examiner: Remains Found On Shoreline Are Of A Human Fetus

DUNKIRK – Remains found on the shoreline of Lake Erie at Lake Erie State Park in Portland on Thursday are the remains of a human fetus, according to New York State Police.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, police said that an examination performed by the Erie County medical examiner’s office confirmed the remains were of a fetus with a gestational age of 18 to 20 weeks, which had been separated from the mother for approximately two to three weeks.

The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be intrauterine fetal demise.

The state police have contacted the Chautauqua County district attorney’s office to present their findings, and the investigation is continuing in order to locate the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the matter.
