Striders Move A Blessing For YMCA

Chautauqua Striders moving to a new location may be a blessing in disguise for the YMCA.

Last month, it was announced that Striders will be moving from the second floor of the YMCA Building located at 101 E. Fourth St., Jamestown. Striders is moving to the Lynn Building, located at 301 E. Second St., Jamestown, with plans to be fully relocated by the beginning of next year. For more than 25 years, Striders has operated at the YMCA.

Mark Eckendorf, YMCA chief executive officer, said the official decision on what will be done with the space Striders used has not been finalized. He said the YMCA Board of Directors still has to vote on what should be done.

”We’ve been with Striders; it is sad to see them go because they have been a good partner and we complimented (each other),” he said. ”In light of their move, we want to make the best out of the situation.”

Eckendorf said preliminary plans for the space seem to be leaning toward the YMCA using it. He said one option would be to bring cardio and nautilus exercise equipment from the basement to the first floor of YMCA’s Fourth Street location. He said then it would be determined if youth and office space would have to be moved upstairs depending on how much space there is left to use.

”Right now everything (exercise equipment) is in the basement. We want to move it upstairs where there is more light, windows,” he said.

Eckendorf said if there is not enough room, the youth space would go upstairs first before the office space. He said there is already youth space upstairs so the transition would be seamless. If there is not room for the office space after bringing up the exercise equipment, then that would also be move to the second floor.

Eckendorf said the extra space will be nice to have for YMCA officials.

”When we had program ideas we were crushed, using every nook and cranny,” he said. ”This will make things nice for people, to have room to expand.”
