Five Hikers Rescued From Chautauqua Gorge

An 11-hour-long rescue effort to find five missing hikers lost in the Chautauqua Gorge has ended on a positive note.

According to WDOE in Dunkirk, the missing hikers who were located around 4 a.m. this morning were extricated from the gorge just after 8 a.m.

Mayville Fire Chief Ron Trippy informed the radio station that cellphones carried by the hikers were pinged to help refine their location. And while the hikers were located around 4 a.m., due to safety concerns and lack of visibility the actual rescue did not take place until daybreak.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Forest Rangers along with Westfield, Mayville and Sherman fire departments assisted with the search and rescue. Shortly after midnight, the Chautauqua County Technical Rescue Team was called to the scene to assist as well.
