Thruway Accident Sends One To Hospital
IRVING – A messy situation could’ve been a whole lot worse on the I-90 East Thruway Monday morning.
Another thruway accident caused some interruptions in the heavy traffic flow after a tanker truck and dump truck collided near the Silver Creek/ Irving exit around 9:30 a.m.
Evans Center Volunteer Fire Department and New York State Thruway Police were on scene.
“It was a little bit of a mess when we got there,” Evans Fire Chief Robert Zamrok said. “One person (dump truck driver) suffered serious injuries – although non-life threatening – and was sent to (Buffalo) ECMC.”
The State Police are still investigating the accident, so names have not been released.
“We had the fire out in 20 minutes,” Zamrok said. “The fire was mostly due to the ruptured fuel tanks, and that could’ve been a huge mess.”
The lanes were shut down for at least an hour, and opened to a single lane while firefighters cleaned the aftermath.
“This could’ve been a lot worse for everyone,” Zamrock said. “The drivers are really lucky.”
New York State Thruway Police said the traffic was still congested in the late afternoon, but it wasn’t due to the accident.
“I have been getting a lot of calls about that.” State Police Dispatch said. “The traffic is mostly due to construction and not because of the accident, which should be all cleared up.”
