Twenty-five high school students from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties completed a recent three-day, residential College Matters Academy on Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus.
Made possible through a College Access Challenge Grant administered by the Higher Education Services Corporation, the academy was designed to enhance leadership skills among 11th- and 12th-graders and develop readiness for college and beyond.
Latrell Armstrong from FOCUS Training was the academy’s featured presenter. Sessions helped students learn about the college search process, networking, financial aid options, time management and creative problem solving. They also participated in a mock college fair.
Chautauqua Striders provided an SAT test preparation session.
According to Lori Svenson, College Access coordinator, the theme of the program was “I believe in me,” emphasizing that the desire to succeed must come from within oneself.
