Joann R. LaRoy

Joann R. LaRoy, 87, formerly of Cherry Street, Apartments, Frewsburg, passed away Monday (July 21, 2014), in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center.

She was born May 14, 1927, in Rouseville, Pa., the daughter of the late Joseph and Genevieve Grubbs Sopher.

Joann attended Oil City High School, and in earlier years was employed by Sylvania, Pleasantville, Pa., Metro Glass, Dalton, Ill., Sterlingworth Corp. and Stuart Furniture, Stuart, Fla.

Prior to retirement in 1988, she was employed by Houston International Corp., Houston, Texas.

Joann was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion Auxiliary, Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2427, Tomball, Texas.

Surviving are four step-sons: Robert (Mae) LaRoy of Albany, N.J., Richard (Michelle) LaRoy of Rome, N.Y., Timothy (Sue) LaRoy of Constableville, N.Y., and Keith (Kim) LaRoy of Kennedy; beloved nieces and caregivers: Jeanne (Tony) Conti and Cheryl (Larry) Nutt, all of Jamestown; 13 step grandchildren; 19 step great-grandchildren; a brother, Homer Sopher of Utica, Pa.; a sister, Betty Martin of Frewsburg; and a sister-in-law, Birdena Peterson of Panama.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Plyler, whom she married June 27, 1947, and who died Jan. 12, 1963; her second husband, Charles D. LaRoy Sr., whom she married Sept. 26, 1970, and who died March 9, 1988; a stepdaughter, Linda LaRoy Beightol; four brothers: John Sopher, Richard Sopher, Howard Sopher and Lawrence Sopher; and three sisters: Kathryn Burt, Jane Wagner and Leta McGee.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Kasting will officiate. Burial will be in Allen Cemetery.

Friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the funeral service Thursday in the funeral home.
