RTPI To Hold ‘BioBlitz’ Event This Weekend

BROCTON – On Friday and Saturday, experts from across the region will take part in a “BioBlitz” conducted by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History at the SUNY College Lodge Nature Preserve in Brocton.

Here is a schedule of the walks and talks:


5 p.m.: Wildflower walk

9 p.m.: Bats and owls


8 a.m.: Bird walk and bird banding demonstration

9 a.m.: Wildflower walk

10 a.m.: Amphibians, reptiles and vernal pools

11 a.m.: Damselflies, dragonflies and butterflies

Noon: Mushrooms and other fungi

1 p.m.: Ants and other insects

3 p.m.: Closing ceremony

A BioBlitz is a 24-hour race to identify as many species of plants and animals of all kinds on a defined area of property.

All of these programs are open to the public and free. Attendees meet in front of the lodge’s main building for walks and talks.

RTPI staff is currently conducting a year-long plant and wildlife assessment of the College Lodge. Working with SUNY staff and experienced local naturalists, the staff is surveying all forms of life in order to create a conservation and management plan recommending best practices for the site.
