Victor C. “Popeye” Harris
Victor C. “Popeye” Harris, 83, of 3393 Carpenter Pringle Road, Ashville, N.Y., passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at WCA Hospital.
He was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Westfield, N.Y., the son of the late Russell and Jennie Safford Harris.
Victor was a 34-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, and had served in the Korean conflict.
He worked for Chautauqua Historic Vessels, working as a captain and engineer from 1985-92. He then resided in Arcadia, Fla., for six months out of the year, between 1991-2003. Victor was a member of the Odd Fellows, The Encampment Branch and the Rebekahs, he had served as the New York State Grand Patriarch from 2002-04, and in 2004 he had the honor of placing the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He had belonged to the Vikings, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having been a commander. Victor was an avid hunter and fisherman.
And will be missed by his constant companion, Sophia, his havanes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Julina Kesby Harris, of Ashville, N.Y.; a daughter, Dorie (Don) Pratte of Jamestown, N.Y.; grandsons: Jeffrey and Jonathan Pratte of Jamestown, N.Y. and David Harris, of Bloomington, Ill.; two sisters: Janet Connelly of San Diego, Calif., and Nancy Newhall, of Jamestown, N.Y.; and also by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by, a daughter, Colette Thunder; a son who died in infancy; and two brothers: David and Paul Harris.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m.Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bemus Point United Methodist Church, with Rev. Allen, of the church, officiating.
Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service at church.
