Deliveryman Charged After Robbery Hoax
A deliveryman claiming to be the victim of an armed robbery in Jamestown on Friday was later charged with fabricating the entire incident.
Eric J. Legos, 30, of Buffalo, initially told police that a male suspect held him up at gunpoint while he was making a delivery to Bardo’s Liquor, located at 1370 E. Second St., shortly before 1 p.m.
Legos claimed that the gunman, who he described as a white “scraggly looking kid” with black hair and baggy shorts, took his wallet before fleeing behind the store.
The wallet, he further claimed, contained nearly $200.
Officers from several local agencies, including the Ellicott and Lakewood-Busti police departments as well as the New York State Police, quickly established a perimeter around the surrounding area with K-9 assistance.
Further investigation and a review of video surveillance revealed that the incident never occurred and that Legos had made up the story.
“What we’re hearing is that the driver didn’t want to finish his deliveries for the day and wanted the weekend off,” said Captain Todd Isaacson, division commander of the Jamestown Police Department. “It wasted a lot of resources … but we try to take (every case) seriously until we can prove it.”
Legos was charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and was transported to the city jail.
