Viking Village Coming To Scandinavian Folk Festival
GERRY – The Society for Creative Anachronism will be returning this year with the largest Viking Village in the Scandinavian Folk Festival’s history. As in years past, members will be dressed in Viking-age clothing and offer displays and demonstrations of the crafts and daily activities from the era. These activities include: woodworking, wire weaving, brewing, armoring, sewing, embroidery, spinning and weaving. Viking vendors will offer Viking-related items.
The axe and knife throwing is back, along with something new from the warriors. There will be demonstrations of single and group combat. The armored combatants will be in the village in large numbers on Saturday, to display the strategies and tactics used in battle. Festival organizers are expecting upwards of 30 warriors on the field as part of this demonstration.
The Viking Village will also display the Viking ship, Norseman. This ship is 40 feet in length with a mast that rises 24.5 feet above the water line. The sail is 297 square feet and has a black raven design. The ship has a Viking crew that is present to discuss the ship and answer questions. People of all ages enjoy climbing up on the Viking ship.
The festival is located on the Gerry Rodeo Grounds on Friday, July 18, from 1-10 p.m.; Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and on Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
