Hotel Renovation Project Under Plan Review

Plan review is the present stage for the planned DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in downtown Jamestown.

Sam Teresi, Jamestown mayor, said the Hamister Group Inc. is planning to renovate the full-service hotel into an upscale business under the Hilton Worldwide umbrella. He said the planning is on track for construction to start this fall and for it to be reopened by next summer.

”What they (Hamister Group) are doing right now are the final design and engineering plans that will need to be approved by Hilton. Once Hilton signs off on them, they come to the city for review and then we issue any permits that they would then need.”

Hamister Group purchased the property located at 150 W. Fourth St. in Jamestown late last year in a public auction. On Oct. 21, a two-day online auction was held on the website for the 146-room hotel located on 1.41 acres of downtown city property. The eight-store hotel was built in 1979.

As a result of the building’s significant disrepair, the company elected to close the hotel while they worked through the various approvals and plans. Teresi said the development group is planning to reopen the hotel’s bars and full-service restaurant. Also, it plans to re-establish the 4,000-square-foot conference and banquet space. The mayor said the Hamister Group plans to spend roughly $10 million in renovating the property.

”They have always indicated a bottom-to-top renovation, replacement of everything at the site,” he said. ”It will be a brand new hotel within the walls of the existing building; brand new on the inside and the outside.”

Teresi said city officials will continue working with the hotel developers with financing for the project.

”If there is a need for any additional financing from the (Industrial Development Agency) or the Jamestown Local Development Corporation, we would work with them like any other business we can help through our programs,” Teresi said.

The Hamister Group is a hotel and health care management company that owns and operates hotels in Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Tennessee, assisted living facilities in Western New York and a home health care agency in Potsdam. The group currently has several projects in various stages of development including the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Buffalo which will open this fall, a hotel development in Niagara Falls and an expansion of their assisted living facility in Orchard Park.
