Yvonne Lemmler Wightman
Yvonne Lemmler Wightman, 98, of Cary, N.C., formerly of Chautauqua, N.Y., died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the home of her daughter and husband in Cary, N.C.
Yvonne was born to Bert and Mabel Watt Lemmler on March 30, 1916, in Buffalo, N.Y. She spent her childhood in Angola, N.Y., graduating from Angola High School in 1933. She then took a year’s course at the YWCA School of Domestic Science in Boston, Mass., before marrying George Daniel Wightman of Eden, N.Y., in 1934.
Yvonne dedicated her life to being a faithful and supportive wife, caring mother of four children, and a hospitable hostess in the several communities in which George pursued a successful career in secondary school teaching and administration.
Music was among Yvonne’s many interests, particularly piano and organ, which she played in several churches. She was a Girl Scout leader and an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Hobbies included sewing, knitting, quilting and various other handicrafts.
Yvonne enjoyed several years of employment at the Cattaraugus County Home in Machias, N.Y., and at Chautauqua Institution where she served in the financial office and special studies program.
When George retired as superintendent of the Ripley (N.Y.) Central School in 1969, Yvonne and George purchased 13 Whitfield Avenue in Chautauqua Institution where they lived until 1981 when they moved to the Wahmeda community just north of the Institution. During these retirement years, Yvonne and George spent winters in California and Florida.
In 1997, Yvonne and George became residents of Oak Creek Retirement Village in Burlington, N.C., while continuing to spend summers in Wahmeda until 2003. Yvonne and George had been married 71 years when George died in 2005.
Those who knew Yvonne will remember her fondly, particularly for her hospitality, as she warmly welcomed friends and new acquaintences into her home, year after year.
Yvonne is survived by her four children: Lawrence (Linda) of Ft. Myers, Fla., Daniel (Kyoko) of Colton, Ore., Lynn (Beverly) of Mayville, N.Y., and Janet (Gary) of Cary, N.C.; along with 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
