BPU Warns Of Phone Scam

The Jamestown BPU is warning customers about a telephone scam which has been attempted on at least two restaurants and one hotel in the Jamestown and West Ellicott.

The businesses have received telephone calls from a person purporting to be from the BPU, demanding that they pay their electric bills within a 45-minute time period or be shut off by the BPU. The caller tells the business to purchase a money order or same day money pack at Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS or 7-Eleven and call back to pay the bill. This is a scam to cheat the person or business called.

The BPU accepts payment in the Customer Service office, City Clerk’s office, Town of Ellicott Clerk’s office, online and at official drop boxes. The BPU does not call customers threatening immediate payment or shut off.
