Gold Stars

Area residents have been dazzled by the display of globally renowned figure skaters and gymnasts for the past two years, and this year will be no different.

The Jamestown Savings Bank Arena, in collaboration with Disson Skating, has announced the Olympic-medalist, figure skating duo of Meryl Davis and Charlie White as the headliner of this year’s Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular to take place at the arena in December.

“It’s a wonderful thing not only for the arena, but for the area as well,” said Hannah Braun, community outreach coordinator for the arena. “We all got to watch Meryl and Charlie perform in the Olympics, but now we can watch them come to our area and perform in person.”

The skating duo of Davis and White are 2014 Olympic champions, and two-time world champions, who will be visiting the arena less than a year after their gold medal performance in Sochi’s 2014 Winter Olympics. Following their Olympic appearance, Davis and White also performed as contestants on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” TV program – in which Davis and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovsky, were crowned champions in the show’s 18th season.

The 2014 Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular marks the third consecutive event to be held in Jamestown. According to Braun, the continuity of bringing Olympic medalists to the arena on a yearly basis speaks highly of the venue as a quality facility for hosting national events such as the Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular.

“I would say it’s very significant for the arena and the community as a whole because it represents that we are capable of hosting big acts like Meryl and Charlie,” she said. “Steve Disson (president and founder of Disson Skating) was adamant about getting the spectacular back into the arena after the first time it was held here. He loves it here, and knows it’s a great facility. So for someone like him to recognize this as a great facility, it shows that this isn’t only the pride and joy of Western New York, but also the pride and joy of national athletes.”

The 2014 Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular will take place Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., when it will be filmed by ABC for future national broadcast. Presale tickets will go on sale Aug. 1 for Arena Insiders, and will be available to the general public Aug. 4.
