Library Readies For Summer Reading Program

Prendergast Library will sponsor a Summer Reading Challenge for all ages this summer starting Monday through Aug. 30.

“We hope people will sign up and challenge themselves to read every day this summer,” said Library Director Tina Scott.

There are separate programs for infants and toddlers, 0-2 years old; youths, grade 6 and below; teens, grades 7-12; and adults, 18 and over. The overall theme is Fizz! Boom! Read!

Details about how participants in each category will keep track of reading to receive small prizes and qualify to win a grand prize are available at 484-7135 or online at

Grand prizes will be a Little Tykes Gift Set for infants and toddlers; two new bicycles, a Deluxe Lego Set, and a mystery gift for youth; an iPod Nano, gift cards for Dipson Theaters and iTunes, and John Green novels for teens; and two Red Lobster gift certificate for adults.

Support for materials, programming, and prizes came from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, Five Star Bank, Lake Shore Savings Bank, Red Lobster, Wegmans and the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County Projects Pool Grant Program.

A Summer Reading Celebration at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 will include a magic show by Dave Jeffers, face painting, refreshments, games, and the grand-prize giveaways.

Prendergast Library’s theme for the week of June 23 will be Color and Light. Plans include a drop-in activity all day Tuesday through Saturday and a family kaleidoscope craft all day Friday. There will also be a special storytime at 3 p.m. Friday, June 27, featuring Madame Butterfly and the Chautauqua Opera Guild and Scent-Sational Saturday on June 28 to discover a mystery smell and sniff out a prize.
