Financial Representative Receives Key To The City
A financial representative who has served his community for more than 62 years has received a key to the city.
On May 23, Sam Teresi, Jamestown mayor, presented a proclamation and the key to the city to Allen Short, founding partner of Short & Smith Insurance Associates, which is located at 501 W. Third St., Jamestown. Short has retired as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and Financial Services. He started his career in 1952, and started his own business with Jim Smith in 1978. Short, a U.S. Marine, graduated from Colgate University in 1947 and was also a graduate of Life Insurance Marketing Institute in 1953. During Short’s career, he has received several national awards, has been a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and was the first person placed on the Northwestern Mutual Greater New York agency Wall of Fame in Syracuse in 2011.
Short has given back to the community receiving the John D. Hamilton Award in 2010 for his work with organizations like the Chautauqua Fund Drive, WCA Hospital, United Way, First Presbyterian Church, Chautauqua Foundation, James Prendergast Library and Chautauqua Institution. Smith said Short managed LINKS Charity for many years which has raised more than $1 million for WCA Hospital in the last 24 years.
“It’s not easy,” Short said when asked about retiring.
Smith said Short & Smith Associates provide their clients with financial planning with life, disability income and long-term care insurance; retirement planing and investments. The business also is a group benefit practice that will represent from two to 1,300 members.
“We want the community to know there will be a continuation of services with Al’s policy holders,” Smith said.
Smith said in 2012 the business hired a new associate, Alex Johnson. Short said all three associates started the financial business at the age of 26.
“We have continuity from Allen to me to Alex,” Smith said.
The business also has associate financial representatives, Debra Liden and Yvonne Robbins.
