Richard Silsby Vedder
Richard Silsby Vedder, died unexpectedly on June 10, 2014, at Scottsdale Health Care Shea Center.
He was born April 28, 1932, in Olean, N.Y., the son of Earl Vedder and Zella LeBarre, both of whom predeceased him. After his mother’s death in 1937, his father married Annabelle Corsette, with whom Richard enjoyed a close relationship until her death in 1989.
He was a graduate of Olean High School, Olean, N.Y., class of 1951, where he played basketball and golf. He also graduated from Mercersburg Academy and Washington & Lee University in 1958, where he played on the golf teams. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict as a high speed radio operator stationed in Germany.
He sold life insurance through Equitable and health insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he served as account executive until his retirement in 1991. After retirement, he worked for Van’s Golf Shop, and volunteered at Scottsdale Health Care, Shea Campus, in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy in 1939; his first wife, Patricia Forness in 1985; and a stepson, Jeffrey Hewitt in 2012.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doreen (Scott) of Scottsdale; a son, Richard S. Vedder II (Cindy and family); stepson, Timothy C. (Julie) Hewitt, Kennedy, N.Y.; step- grandchildren: Elizabeth L. Hewitt Tipton, Warren, Pa., Robert Scott Hewitt, Kennedy, N.Y., Nolan Hewitt, Cuba, N.Y., and Ayren Hewitt, Cuba, N.Y.; a step great-grandson, Owen R. Tipton, Warren, Pa.; and a loving daughter-in-law, Christine B. Hewitt.
Richard was an enthusiastic golfer and it is hard to find a golf course he has not played. He avidly followed the PGA career of close family friend, golfer Michael (Cynthia) Allen, and enjoyed spending time with the Allen family (Christie, Michelle) while Michael was on tour.
He was a volunteer for the Corning LPGA and played in the Pro-Am tournament many years. He was his son’s little league baseball and golf coach in Ole-an. He was an active member of the Olean City Club and Bartlett and Wellsville country clubs.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Saturday June, 14, at 3 p.m., at Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale. Private burial will be held at Mt. View Cemetery, Olean, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. A memorial service in Olean, N.Y., will be announced at a later date.
