SHERIDAN – A recreational vehicle traveling eastbound on the New York State Thruway caught fire Tuesday morning.
The Irving Fire Department was the first on scene and Fredonia Fire Department was soon to follow. New York State Police and New York State Thruway Authority were also at the scene.
According to Irving Fire Chief Gerald Rice Sr., the fire was started when the propane tank erupted.
“The propane tank blew up,” he said. “There was a Harley-Davison motorcycle hooked up to a separate trailer on back, and the owner tried to get to it, but the flames were too high. Everything is a total loss.”
The motor home, which Rice commented was the size of a bus, just crumbled.
“It took us about 40 minutes to put out the fire and another hour to clean up the debris,” he said.
Traffic was stopped on the thruway between the Fredonia and Silver Creek exits for about an hour.
Rice said what was left of the vehicle was towed away.
Names of the driver and passengers have not been released.
