Today’s Thought Just ‘Twisted Scripture’

To the Readers’ Forum:

On the front page of the May 13 edition of The Post Journal, there appears a blip titled “Today’s Thought.” It is a quote from Ayn Rand and presented thusly: “So you think that money is the root of all evil. Have you ever asked what is the root of money?”

I would suggest first, that the “root of money” is inconsequential (it is merely an exchange) and secondly that “…money is the root of all evil…” is a frequent misquote of the Bible. The actual quote is: “For the LOVE of money is the root of all evil …” (1 Timothy 6:10).

Yes indeed, many people love and worship money above God. As to “the root of all evil” I should mention that there is an underlying current of “money” attached to nearly every infraction we may encounter, because people place such high regard on “the Almighty Dollar.”

Since the Fall, man has wanted to blame someone or something else. Blame Eve, or the Devil made me do it, or it’s the money’s fault. The problem actually stems from within the sinful heart of man. Over the past decades I have heard more “twisted scripture” than I care to recall. It seems as though people just quote the Bible by saying what they want it to say.
