Celoron Hosts Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

CELORON – The village of Celoron and the American Legion Herman Kent Post 777 held the annual Memorial Day ceremony in the village Monday morning.

The ceremony began at the Lucille Ball Memorial Park at 9 a.m, where Scott Schrecengost, mayor of Celoron, welcomed attendees.

Schrecengost introduced Larry Bimber, commander of the Herman Kent Post 777; Charles Andrews, president of the Hespler Branch 272; Tom Smith, commander of Branch 822; Tutor Squadron, Canadian Air Cadets; Lt. Col. Ronald Gowing, Ret. Royal Canadian Air Force; Dave Gowing, sponsoring chairman of Branch 822; and the Tutor Squadron Air Cadets.

Bimber addressed the crowd, explaining the importance of Memorial Day.

Bimber, Schrecengost, Lt. Col. Gowing and Andrews participated in the “placing of the wreaths.”

Katie LaBarron, of Herman Kent Post 777, performed a roll-call of wartime casualties.

A three-volley salute was led by Al Crick, commander of the fire squad, of Herman Kent Post 777. Following the salute, a bugler from Post 777 played taps.

LaBarron closed the event with a prayer.

After the service, a parade began at Southwestern Central School at 10:45 a.m.
