Falconer Girls Upset Akron, 7-6
AKRON – The No. 12 Falconer Lady Golden (13-4) came away with an upset against No. 5 Akron on Friday, winning 7-6 in the Section 6 Class B prequarterfinals.
Meghan Chase’s two-RBI single in the sixth inning gave Falconer a lead at 6-4 that it was able to maintain despite singles from Abby Stone and Tobi Abrams of Akron in the final inning.
Abby Courtney earned the win on the mound with a complete game performance that included five strikeouts, no walks, and two earned runs.
Jenna Fellows led Falconer offensively, collecting two hits, including a triple, while Kaylei Russell went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The Lady Golden Falcons will now have a rematch at No. 4 Fredonia (15-1) on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m..
DEPEW – Backed by the pitching of Karsen Cotton, top-seeded Depew (12-3) eliminated No. 8 Southwestern (9-7) from the playoffs.
Cotton piled up 16 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and two walks as the hosts prevailed over the Lady Trojans, 6-0.
Sydney Burk of Southwestern matched Cotton with scoreless innings until the fourth inning when the Lady Wildcats broke it open with a five-run outburst. The Lady Wildcats added a final run in the sixth inning.
Brooke Guay stroked four singles to lead the Depew attack.
Burk singled in the first inning and Hayden Burgeson doubled in the seventh for the Southwestern hits. Burk went the distance in allowing eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Depew hosts Gowanda on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
