Social Media Star
Tammy Snyder, president of International Ordnance Technologies in Jamestown, was recently awarded the Small Business Development Center’s “Social Media Entrepreneur of the Year” award.
Snyder has owned IOT for the past 11 years and manufactures products for the defense industry. On June 19, 2013, IOT launched a new website at the urging of Curt Anderson, business adviser for the SBDC at Jamestown Community College. Instantly IOT began receiving international sales leads and within months, it received orders for $40,000 and $400,000 through the new website. IOT is currently quoting several projects that could translate into well over $1 million in new sales.
Snyder credits the design skills of Eric Martin from the Martin Group in Erie, Pa. for producing such a dynamic website. Yet, she says putting up a new website is just the beginning to finding online success. Snyder began to work diligently on social media strategies with her website and through LinkedIn. She praised LinkedIn, saying it helped bring in manufacturers and it would have taken years to get the contacts she has today without it.
“It was great that an old-school manufacturing company like mine, here in Jamestown, could win the SBDC Social Media Entrepreneur of the Year award compared to companies throughout New York City and the rest of the state,” Snyder said. “As a small business dealing with daily challenges, it was wonderful for our dedicated team at IOT to be recognized.”
Vince Horrigan, Chautauqua County executive, said the county needs to develop and grow existing businesses in the area.
“We underestimate how much we search and look online,” Horrigan said.
“Tammy Snyder is deeply committed to her customers, employees and the community,” Anderson said. “It was just amazing to see her win this much-deserved award and to show the rest of the state that manufacturers in Jamestown are utilizing social media to take their companies global. We are actively working with other businesses in the area to bring back this award next year as well.”
