Police Warn Of Scam Artists Posing As IRS Agents
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to its residents about scam artists reportedly posing as IRS employees.
On Friday, the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a resident who said she had received two threatening phone calls in the last three days from someone claiming to be “Officer John Roberts of the IRS.” The caller, who is said to have a foreign accent, demanded that the victim or her attorney return his phone call due to a “very extreme situation.”
The victim later called the IRS and was advised that “John Roberts” was not an employee of the IRS. She was also told that the IRS would never contact citizens and demand a phone call.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be wary of phone calls that use scare tactics, as they often are scam artists attempting to gain personal information to defraud their victims.
If such a call is received, residents are encouraged not to give out any personal information and to call their local police agency.
