Two Fishermen Sent To Hospital Following Boating Accident

BEMUS POINT – Two out-of-state fisherman were rushed to WCA Hospital following a boating accident Friday.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene of a capsized boat near the Bemus Point side of Chautauqua Lake Veterans Memorial Bridge shortly after 4 p.m.

“We’re not sure of the circumstances, but the boat became capsized,” Bemus Point Fire Chief Steve Hayes said. “Both of the occupants were in the lake. One of the two fishermen had a medical condition at the scene and both were taken to WCA for treatment.”

Hayes said it was unclear whether or not the medical condition occurred prior to or as a result of the boat being capsized.

According to scanner reports, one of the subjects was unresponsive and in “cardiac arrest” during his transport to WCA Hospital.

With more boats expected on the water as the weather continues to improve, Hayes reminds everyone to take proper precautions to minimize any issues.

“It’s a good time to remind everyone who goes out to wear their lifejackets,” he said.

Hayes said it was unclear whether or not the fishermen involved in Friday’s accident were wearing their lifejackets, but noted there were lifejackets in the water.

No further information with regard to the condition of the fishermen was made available by press time.

Assisting the Bemus Point Fire Department at the scene were members of the New York State Police, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s and Chautauqua County Dive Team.
