Panama Holds On For Victory Over Brocton

BROCTON – Panama had to hold on after a huge rally by host Brocton (3-4, 4-6) as the Lady Panthers (4-4, 4-5) posted a 5-4 victory in Division 2 West softball.

Through the early innings, Panama built a 4-0 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs fought back and tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

Panama, however, plated the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and starter Carly Abbate kept Brocton’s offense from scoring the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Abbate earned the complete-game win, striking out six while walking three and surrendering eight hits. She also doubled to help her own cause.

For Brocton, Jess Putcher took the loss in relief of starter Jess Merle, who went the first three innings, striking out seven and walking five. Putcher finished things up with five strikeouts and no walks as the pair gave up three hits.

Madelyn Roberts contributed a double and two singles and Putcher also doubled.

CLYMER – Jenna Caskey went the distance, scattering 11 hits with six strikeouts and five walks as Cassadaga Valley downed winless Clymer (0-6, 0-6).

Brooke Johnson and Alex Ruiz stroked three hits with Johnson driving home three runs for the Lady Cougars, Teammate Rebecca Rothleder plated two runs with a double and a single.

Cassadaga Valley, leading all the way, had an eight-run third inning.

For Clymer, Rachel James, Courtney Newton, Lauren Dunnewold, Nashia Duryee and Miranda Marucci all had two hits. James and Newton knocked in two runs and Dunnewold one.
