Mary Ungerman Lewis

Mary Ungerman Lewis, 88, departed this world on May 1, 2014, at her home, with her loving family by her side.

Mary was the daughter of John and Mildred Ungerman, who immigrated from Czechoslovakia via Ellis Island. The family then settled in Jamestown, N.Y.

Mary attended Jamestown Public Schools then the Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in Buffalo, N.Y., graduating in 1947. Upon returning home, she worked at the Jamestown General Hospital, and was also a member of the Young Adults Civic League, where she met Harry with whom she wed Aug. 14, 1954.

Mary was very proud of her service as a “Youth Ambassador” traveling to Germany just after World War II to represent the United States in an effort to encourage diplomacy. She would later receive her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the Syracuse University College of Nursing in 1956. Mary took time off from her career to concentrate on raising her three children, participating in PTA, Girl Scouts and community groups. She enjoyed spending summers on Chautauqua Lake with her family.

Resuming her career as a registered nurse, Mary worked at The Silverman Hospital then Hutchings Psychiatric Center. She retired after two decades of service.

Mary spent retirement not only enjoying her family but living her life to the fullest through travel, being a patron of the arts, theater and opera. Mary was active in area historical preservation groups and neighborhood watch in her Syracuse home of 56 years.

Mary was a person with a heart of gold who would invest herself in projects and people with thoughtful and loving generosity.

Mary is survived by her husband of 59 years, Harry B. Lewis; brother, Ted Ungerman (Shirley) of Seven Hills, Ohio; children: Sylvia Lewis, Robert Lewis (Panicha and Jonathan) and Cynthia Johnson (Robert); and loving friends.

Calling hours are Monday, May 5, from 4-7 p.m. with service immediately following at Burns-Garfield Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery, Lakewood, N.Y.
