Roach Provides Great Relief For MG

BEMUS POINT – Outstanding relief pitching by sophomore Matt Roach carried Maple Grove (2-3, 5-6) to victory in West Division 1 baseball on Thursday.

Roach worked 4 innings of two-hit ball while racking up eight strikeouts and issuing just one walk as the Red Dragons prevailed over Silver Creek (0-5, 2-6), 11-4.

Silver Creek took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning when Maple Grove rallied for five runs to go ahead for good at 7-4.

Roach put the Red Dragons ahead, 5-4, with an RBI single and Corey Wefing capped the five-run inning with another RBI single.

Wefing (two RBIs), Cass Howard (RBI double), Roach and Nolan Knipe all had two hits for the Red Dragons. Collin Stack and Graham Nelson added doubles in the winning attack.

For Silver Creek, Nick Iskra, John Murphy and Tim Manning had two hits with Manning knocking in two ruins.



LANCASTER – Griffen O’Brien tossed a no-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks as Lancsater (3-0 in league) topped Jamestown (0-4, 0-8), 11-0.

Lancaster played exceptional defense with three double plays behind O’Brien.

Jon Anderson stroked three singles, O’Brien helped his own cause with two doubles, Cistello and Leagim each had a double and single for the winners.



ELLICOTTVILLE – Winfred Nelson pitched a complete, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks as Pine Valley (6-1) downed Ellicottville (3-3, 3-7), 6-2.

Thomas Raiport hit a three-run home run over the left field fence off Alex Fisher to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Nelson cracked a two-run double in the seventh inning. Fisher allowed only two hits in 6 innings with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Phalla Musall had three hits for Ellicottville while Pete Hutchinson added a RBI double in the sixth, Robert Sawicki contributed another double and Alex Delity an RBI single in the second.
