Falconer Approves Budget

FALCONER – The Falconer board approved its village budget Monday.

The budget has a .6 percent increase in the tax levy, the amount collected by property taxes. The increase amounts to $793,274. The total budget for Falconer for the 2014-15 fiscal year is $1,333,159, and the tax rate per $1,000 of assessed value is $8.75. Since 1995, the village tax rate per thousand has stayed in the ballpark of $8.67-$9.16 without much variation from year to year.

In other news, Falconer approved several runs. The Junior Firefighters are sponsoring a 5K walk/run, A Run to Remember on June 29. The fire company is sponsoring a motorcycle dice run on Aug. 16 to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s. Compeer Chautauqua, in collaboration with Jamestown Community College students and the Department of Mental Hygiene, will have their second annual Strides for MY Mind 5K on May 3.

The Memorial Day committee announced the Veterans’ Memorial observance set for May 26. The parade will assemble at 9:30 a.m. on West Main Street at Dow Street and will begin at 10 a.m. The participants will travel Main Street to North Work Street to the Pine Hill Cemetery for the American Legion Henry Mosher Post 638 services. A prayer service will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery on South Dow Street.

The Falconer Business Association will be holding the annual village-wide garage sales May 2-3. Participants may sign up to be listed on the map and receive a yard sign at the Falconer Vac Shoppe for $5. Maps will be available on May 1.

Lisa Vanstrom, District 15 Chautauqua County legislator, presented a resolution in recognition of Earth Day, which covers the Village of Falconer Pride Day cleanup on May 17.

Frank LaMarca and Joe Paladino updated the board on the plans for the American Legion Henry Mosher Post 638’s memorial in Davis Park.

Michael Steele was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
