JoAnn Johnson Huffman
Memorial Services for JoAnn Johnson Huffman, 77, who was born in Chautauqua, N.Y., on Nov. 13, 1936, will be held Friday, April 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Auburn, with the Rev. Rusty Hudson and the Rev. Josh Agerton officiating.
She was the youngest of the four children of Carl and Gertrude Johnson. JoAnn loved Chautauqua Central School, where she attended from kindergarten through high school. She excelled in her studies, and particularly enjoyed music. She played many instruments, but her greatest love was the French horn. Living on the grounds at Chautauqua Institution provided her the opportunity to attend concerts, plays and operas during the summer season each year. These were activities that she loved. Her goal throughout her school years was to be a registered nurse so after high school graduation she enrolled as a student in a joint program at the University of Buffalo and the Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in Buffalo, N.Y.
JoAnn married Dale Huffman on Feb. 4, 1956. The one constant for JoAnn has been the love of family. JoAnn has been a wonderful mother to her three children, and was active in school and church activi-ties with the family. She enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren: two in Mobile, Ala., one in Toronto, Canada, and three in Auburn. She stood behind and supported Dale through all of his career moves and in his retirement.
JoAnn was a philanthropist! She supported the 5pSociety because of her first born granddaughter. Amy was born with this genetic disorder. She supported the East Alabama Food Bank as well as the church. She was named a Paul Harris Fellow for her support of the Rotary Foundation. A student loan fund “The JoAnn Johnson Huffman student loan fund” was established in her honor at Hurlbut Memorial Church in Chautauqua, N.Y. The JoAnn Huffman Endowed Scholarship in Animal (Meat) Sciences has been established at Auburn University in her honor of her undying support for Dale during his career.
She was predeceased by her parents; and her brother, Robert (Bob) Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Dale, as well as daughter, Shari (Dennis) Campbell, Mobile, Ala., and their daughters: Amy and Kelly; son, Randy (Lisa) Huffman, Toronto, Ontario, Canada and their daughter, Lauryn; daughter Emily (Mike) Waldrop, Auburn, Ala., and their children: Trent, Tanner and Mallory.
