Lawton, Powers Double For SWCS

ALLEGANY – Katie Lawton and Kelsey Powers showed the way as Southwestern won its Division 1 girls track opener on Wednesday afternoon in a meet held at Allegany Central School because the Olean track won’t ready until later in the season.

Lawton won the 1,500 (5:28) and 3,000 (12:55) while Powers captured the 100 hurdles (17.8) and 400 intermediate hurdles (1:13) as the Lady Trojans prevailed over Olean, 99-40 to run the overall record to 2-0.

Overall, the Lady Trojans were first in 14 events and lost only in the 100, 400 relay and the long jump.

SALAMANCA – Haylei John and Ryanne Yehl led Salamanca to a hard-fought 77-64 verdict over Franklinville in a non-league meet on Thursday.

John took the 100 (13.6), the 400 (1:08) and 200 (29.10) while Yehl won the high jump (4-10), the long jump (14-2) and the triple jump (32-7) in the win.

Yehl has already qualified for the Section 6 championships with a 5-foot-0 in the high jump last week.

Kelsey Brown of Salamanca was a double winner in capturing the 1,500 (5:50,70) and 800 (2:45.9).
