Mayville Board Sets Budget Hearing Date, OKs Volleyball Court
MAYVILLE – At its March meeting, the Mayville Village Board set the annual budget hearing for the 2014-15 year. The hearing on the proposed budget will be held at 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
At the meeting Devon Taylor, village historian, presented his annual report. In the past year, Taylor has responded to a great many inquiries from people researching family history, from individuals and organizations wanting local historical information, and from collectors of old photographs, postcards and other artifacts. Taylor works on the “Chautauqua People” series on a local cable access channel, and maintains files of local news items and obituaries to be preserved for future use. In the course of his report he demonstrated his remarkable knowledge of area history and local families.
The board approved a proposal for Boy Scout troop 126 to build a 60-foot by 30-foot sand volleyball court in Lakeside Park this spring. The project will be headed by Joey Parker, who developed the plan as his Eagle Scout service project. If approved by the area Boy Scout council, the project will move forward and the court should be ready for use by the end of May. Donations for building materials will be solicited from area businesses, and community fundraisers will be held for the purchase of additional materials. The village DPW will provide assistance with the project.
Mayor Martin Bova presented information about the proposed Barcelona to Chautauqua Institution shared-use trail. The project is a part of the Chautauqua County Comprehensive Plan, Chautauqua 20/20 and the 2012 Greenway Plan. It would include pedestrian and bicycle lanes, some shared and some dedicated, as well as hiking trails. In some areas it will parallel existing roads. The villages of Westfield and Mayville, the town of Westfield and the town of Chautauqua will work in partnership with the county to move this project forward. It is hoped that the trail will add recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
