Group Of Russian Teachers To Visit Jamestown Area

Six Russian teachers are visiting Jamestown and the surrounding area this week and part of next.

The women, all of whom are English teachers in the city of Perm, Russia, are visiting through the Perm Mission Network for the purpose of learning about American culture and its education system.

The women arrived in the United States on March 6, and were hosted in New York City by the New Hope Wesleyan Church of Brooklyn. While in the city, they attended a Houghton College piano/choir/orchestra performance at Carnegie Hall, and also visited the Statue of Liberty and the Metropolitan Museum. They spent last week visiting Houghton College and Fillmore Public Schools.

They will arrive in Jamestown today, and will remain in the surrounding area through March 26 while making several visits along the way. Their busy itinerary begins today with a visit to Persell Middle School from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. They will be participating in tours of Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown campus Tuesday. On Wednesday, they will visit with Mayor Sam Teresi, along with the Jamestown Police and fire departments, before embarking on tours of the Gateway Center and the Basket Company.

The visit will head north on Thursday, with an excursion to Chautauqua Lake Central School and a potential trip to the Sugar Shack in Westfield to see the production process of maple syrup. The teachers will spend Friday cooking meals for the Perm Mission Network’s annual authentic Russian dinner fundraiser, the proceeds from which allows the network to continue hosting teachers on a yearly basis. The dinner will begin Saturday at 6 p.m., and will be held at the Levant Wesleyan Church in Falconer. Sunday will be set aside as free time to be spent with the teachers’ host families.

The group will head east on Interstate 86 on March 24 to visit a Salamanca Indian Reserve, and will head west on March 25 for a shopping excursion in Erie – with a potential tour of the Russian Orthodox Church to conclude the visit before their March 26 departure.

The Perm Mission Network is a group of local residents that has partnered with students and teachers from Perm, Russia, for the past 17 years. As part of its program, the Perm Mission Network brings a group of Russian English teachers to Western New York, as well as several other locations during their stay in the U.S. Although the teachers each buy their tickets to America, Perm Mission Network covers all in-country expenses.
