By Terry Heslink

SYRACUSE – Jamestown High School has moved up five spots and is ranked No. 14 in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA boys basketball poll.

The Red Raiders won their fourth Section 6 title in the last five years and are 17-4 overall. They have another meeting with No. 6 Greece Athena of Section 5 (21-1) at 8:15 p.m., Saturday in the Far West Regional at Buffalo State and hope to avenge a setback in their season opener and head off to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four in Glens Falls.

Sherman (20-1) is still No. 3 in Class D and captured the Section 6 title by prevailing over No. 13 Panama (15-6), 57-40. The Wildcats hope to join Jamestown in Glens Falls by beating either Section 5’s Notre Dame of Batavia (18-3) or Houghton Academy (12-10) on Saturday.

Randolph (15-7) is ranked No 19 in Class C, but will likely slip due to a 50-47 loss to No. 8 Middle Early College (17-5) in the Section 6 Class C crossover game Tuesday night. Silver Creek (12-9) is honorable mention.

Olean (19-3) is ranked No. 4 in Class B and defeated No. 5 Buffalo East (18-4) by three points in the Section 6 championship game last night. Fredonia (16-5) and Salamanca (14-5) are honorable mention selections.

All the leaders in the five classes are the same as last week – Abraham Lincoln of New York City (25-3) in Class AA, Scotia-Glenville of Section 2 (21-0) in Class A, Westhill of Section 3 (22-0) in Class B, Clyde-Savannah of Section 5 (21-0) in Class C and New York Mills of Section 3 (20-1) in Class D.

The girls basketball polls for this week have yet to be released.
