Nicholson Still In Hunt For NJCAA Title
SPOKANE, Wash. – Jake Nicholson of Jamestown Community College won two matches and had no defeats at the NJCAA Wrestling Tournament on Friday at Spokane Convention Center.
Nicholson captured his first bout at 133 pounds by defeating Skyler McComb of Pratt CC 4-0, then, he beat Darrell Pampkin of Iowa Central CC, 5-3.
With 2-1 records for JCC were Kyle Mulcahy and Pat McCarthy and Austin Lynn.
Mike Southwick of JCC had an 0-2 record.
McCarthy (125) lost his first encounter to Nate Smith of Iowa Central CC by a 7-3 count. Then, McCarthy received a bye and grabbed a 7-5 decision over Quintni Noel of Darton College.
Mulcahy (141) decisioned Marshall Phelan of Labette CC, 16-13, lost a 12-7 decision to Matt Gay of Southwestern Oregon CC and pinned Mike Stewart of Ellsworth CC in 4:21.
Lynn (184) was pinned by Adrian Salas of Clackamas CC in 6:53, received a bye and flattened Dakota Downs of Lincoln College in 2:01.
Mike Southwick (157) was dealt a 2:40 fall by Greg Jacquez of Harper College and a 6:05 pin by Tyler Ellwood of Iowa Lakes CC.
Northeastern Oklahoma A&M is in first place after the opening round with 45 points followed by Northwest College with 37 points, Clackamas CC with 36 points, North Idaho College with 29 points and Neosho County CC and Iowa Central CC tied with 27 points.
The wrestling resumes today at 10:30 a.m. with the championships at 6:45 p.m.
