Thule Lodge To Begin New Season
BEMUS POINT – The Thule Lodge, located at 4123 Pancake Hill Road, will begin its new season of activities, events and dinners in March. Thule Lodge was chartered almost 107 years ago as a social club for the Swedish immigrants. The lodge continues to preserve the Swedish heritage through various events and activities during the year.
Recently a planning committee met to establish the calendar for 2014. Beginning on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m., the first lodge meeting of the year will be held at the lodge. This is also to celebrate St. Patrick’s day, and wearing green by those attending will add to the meeting. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. Tom Eckberg will serve as the lodge chairman, with Susan W. Sipos as the vice chairman. Jeffrey Anderson is the immediate past chairman. Lynn Meyers will serve as the lodge secretary and Loretta Smith as the treasurer. Donna Sandberg will be the financial secretary. Diane K. Shaw will serve as the lodge chaplain.
A lodge cleanup day is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 9 a.m., and then on Saturday, April 19 will be the lodge meeting with the Easter egg-sexa. The phrase means foods prepared with eggs, in addition other Swedish foods which will be served. In Sweden, Walpurgis night is observed at the end of April in which farmers would clean up their farms, have a bon-fire to scare away wild animals and then let their own farm animals outside to graze. Thule Lodge will have their clean up in the same time as Walpurgis night, but does not have farm animals to let outside.
Friday night fish dinners will begin on May 2 at the lodge from 5-7 p.m. These will be held through October. There is always a second choice meal served as well. Beginning in May, the lodge monthly meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. through September. Thule Lodge will be participating in the annual Scandinavian Festival held in Gerry during July 18-20. A busy year has been planned and Thule Lodge always welcomes new members.
