JCC Ends Season With Ninth Straight Loss

BATAVIA – The losing streak reached nine in a row for sixth-seeded Jamestown Community College as it finished its season with a 7-18 record on Tuesday night in the first round of the NJCAA Region 3 Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament.

JCC fell behind by a 52-43 score at halftime and got within eight points in the final seconds, but lost for the third successive time to No. 3 Genesee CC, 104-96, which has won seven of its last eight games.

Tyreek Jewell played his final game for JCC, finishing with 32 points on 10-of-21 from the field. He added six rebounds and six assists.

Jerome Jackson was next with 21 points while Ohndo Smith had 20 and Kasean Jackson 15 as the Jayhawks scored their most points of the season.

Smith led in rebounds with eight of the 35 picked up by JCC.

The Jayhawks led in the early stages, 6-2, but the Cougars (22-7) rattled off 11 straight points to take the lead for good at 13-6.

JCC got within 42-40, but a 10-3 run by the hosts made it a nine-point lead at intermission.

Ervin Mitchell had 18 points in the second half for Genesee, which had its lead at 75-55 on a 3-point basket by Naquil Jones with under 10 minutes left.

JCC scored twice after forcing two turnovers to close within eight with under two minutes left, but that was as close as it got.

Jones checked out with 25 points and 10 rebounds followed by Mitchell with 24 points and Alex Morris and Alastair Cole had 18 each for the winners. Jason Perry-Murray had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Da’Shawn Suber handed out six assists in the win.

Genesee faces No. 2 Erie CC in the Region 3 Tournament semifinals at Monroe CC at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Top-seeded Monroe battles No. 4 Niagara County CC at 1 p.m.

The championship game is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
