Lakewood Should Accept Grant For K-9 Unit

To The Reader’s Forum:

As a longtime dog owner, I’m always in favor of K-9 units, such as the one the Lakewood board is considering.

Dogs have an average of about 200 million scent receptors (short-nosed dogs have fewer; humans have about 5 million) which makes them ideal for tracking, whether it be a criminal, a lost child or someone suffering from Alzheimer’s. Depending on the breed, they may also be trained to sniff out illegal drugs, and, again, depending on the breed, may also learn protection work. They don’t need a pension plan and they work for kibble!

I don’t live in Lakewood, but if I did I’d be encouraging the village board to accept the grant for a K-9 unit.
