Meer Wins Spelling Bee At Southwestern

Saad Meer, son of Shahnawaz and SyedaAyesh Meer of Lakewood, was the overall and eighth-grade level winner of the Buffalo News Spelling Bee with the winning word “turbulence.”

The spelling bee was held recently in the Southwestern High School auditorium. Josh Pike was the runner-up; the seventh-grade level winner was Kylie Brown, while Isabella Moore was the sixth-grade level winner.

Thirty-eight students participated in this years’ contest. Diane LaGrega was chairperson and organizer of the event. The judges for the competition were Julia Casselman, Mary Kay Cook and Amy Pearson. Leading the spellers and pronouncing the words for the spelling bee was Tim Becker.

Meer also took the county level spelling test on Feb. 7. The top scorers from each of the 10 contest divisions and the next 10 top scorers overall will be invited to participate in the Western New York Oral Finals in March.
