John R. Stoffer

FREWSBURG, N.Y.-John R. Stoffer, 82, a resident of Tanglewood Manor, formerly of Austin Hill Road, Frewsburg. passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at WCA Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born at home in Wethersfield, N.Y., on Dec. 22, 1931, to the Late Gertrude Becker and John Edmond Stoffer.

He graduated from Warsaw High School in the class of 1950. John served as the town of Carroll justice of peace for many years. He was an A-I in-seminator for ABS, and enjoyed working on the family farm.

He was an avid outdoorsman who had a passion for hunting, fishing and gardening. He valued his many vacations traveling the country from Florida to the West Coast. He loved playing golf and enjoyed bowling with his friends. He was outgoing in the community and a member of many organizations including the New York State Magistrates Association, Sons of the Frewsburg American Legion Post 556, the American Breeders Association, Lady of Victory Catholic Church and a volunteer fireman for the Frewsburg Fire Department.

John left behind many family members including his loving wife, Dorothy Stoffer of Frewsburg, whom he married March 31, 1990; three daughters: Cindy (David) Wielgas of Amherst, Wendy (John) Short of Frewsburg, and Debra Stoffer of Jamestown; his stepchildren: Randall (Deb-bie) Akin, Martin (Kathy) Akin and Kristine (Paul) Yeskey, all of Frewsburg; two sisters: Celia (Joseph) Daniel of Warsaw, and Patricia (Robert) Everman of Tennessee; three brothers: Joseph (Polly) Stoffer of Warsaw, N.Y., Carl (Barbara) Stoffer of Gainesville, N.Y., and Pete (Janet) Stoffer of Conesus, N.Y.’ his grandchildren: Daniel, Andrew and Michael Wielgas of Amherst, and Stephanie Short of Frewsburg; step grandchildren: Jesse McCulla of Arizona., Tenneil (Joshua) Stelmack of Frewsburg, Brian (Amber) Short of Michigan, Brandan Yeskey of Jamestown, Lance Cpl., Wayne Akin of North Carolina, Cassidy Akin, Kelsey Akin and Tage Akin, all of Frewsburg; great-grandchildren: Kole, Braelyn and Presleigh Stelmack, Syerra Yeskey and Dominic Short; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Hall Stoffer, whom he married in 1953, and who passed June 10, 1989. He was also preceded by his brother, Max (Dorothy) Stoffer; and sister, Mary Stoffer (Joseph) Wassink.

Arrangements are by the Peterson Funeral, Frews-burg, where family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Frewsburg, by Father Daryl Duffy. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Frewsburg American Legion Post 556 to follow where the family invites you to join them in a celebration of life.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, that do-nations be made to The Frewsburg Fire Department or The Chautauqua County Humane Society.
