AAUW?To Hold Advocacy 101 Workshop?Feb. 19 At JCC

As the satate Legislature gears up for another session of budget negotiations and votes in both chambers, the American Association of University Women of New York State is educating the public about their civic duties and the lawmaking process.

As a part of the effort, the Jamestown Branch of the AAUW will host an Advocacy 101 Workshop, free of charge for the general public, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Katherine Jackson Carnahan Center at Jamestown Community College. The workshop will be led by Kimberly Hayes Pollard, AAUW regional field organizer.

Attendees will learn how to: talk to their elected officials, write an Op-Ed or Letter to the Editor, start a petition and use social media to share their messages.

“We don’t have to be full-time activists or even policy experts to be good advocates,” Pollard said. “All we need is passion and a few minutes a week to make our voices heard.”

Examples from the AAUW policy agenda will be used as illustrations.

Pollard joined AAUW in August 2013 as a regional field organizer for Region I, which includes Maine, New Hampshire and New York. She has more than 10 years’ experience with national non-profits and political campaigns. She has worked to advocate for kindergarten through 12th grade education, military service members and veterans and issues impacting low-income families. Prior to joining AAUW, Pollard developed community outreach initiatives for a non-profit serving wounded warriors and their families and managed Neighborhood Teams and voter registration events in the 2012 Presidential election in Fairfax County, Va. Pollard has a bachelor’s in Political Science from the State University at Albany.

A reduced price AAUW membership will be offered at a price of $45.50 at the event. The membership will run through June 30, 2015. Membership is open to anyone with a two-year associates degree or higher.

AAUW empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
