Viola J. Gourley

Viola J. Gourley, 84, of Route 957, Sugar Grove, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the Rouse Home in Youngsville, Pa.

Mrs. Gourley was born in Conewango Valley, N.Y., on June 30, 1929, the daughter of the late Fred and Walza (Brawley) Benson.

She served as an elder at the Sugar Grove Pres-byterian Church and was a member of the Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church Women’s Association.

She enjoyed traveling to Safety Harbor in Florida, during the winter months for many years, and also cooking. She was famous for her macaroni and cheese and her fudge. She worked side by side with her hus-band, James on their dairy farm for more than 40 years, and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a very devoted homemaker.

She was the wife of James W. Gourley, whom she married May 23, 1948, in Sugar Grove, Pa. Also surviving are a daughter, Evelyn (Earl) Woodburn of Bear Lake, Pa.; four sons: William (Nancy) Gourley, John Gourley, Gary (Peggy) Gourley, all of Sugar Grove, Pa., and Paul Gourley of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a former daughter-in-law, Patti Gourley of Sugar Grove; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren with two great-grandchildren on the way; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandaughter, Jamie Sue Woodburn Retterer; three sisters: Nellie Ingerson, Dale Egbert and Alice Smith; three brothers: George Benson John Benson and Fred Benson Jr.; and a special daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Gourley.

Friends will be received on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Branch of McKinney Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. A funeral and committal service will be held at the Sugar Grove Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

Burial will be private in Turnpike Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Sugar Grove Free Library or the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
