Royal C. Briggs Sr.

CHAUTAUQUA – Royal C. Briggs Sr., 82, of Potter Road, Mayville, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2014), in Westfield Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 3, 1931, in the town of North Harmony, the son of the late George and Emma Zelmer Briggs.

Royal was a heavy equipment operator for Chautauqua Institution for 52 years, where he had also been a night watchman.

He was a member of Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church, and a member of Chautauqua Fire Department which he was a member of for 59 years.Royal enjoyed hunting and traveling especially going to Gettysburg and Tennessee. The street Royal Way at Chautauqua Institution was named after him.

He is survived by three sons: Royal “Butch” (Janet) Briggs Jr. of Chautauqua, Alden Briggs of Mayville, and Chris (Paula) Briggs of Chautauqua; seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Heather (Duane), Ashlie, Alisha (Levi), Nathaniel, Kristen, and John; and six great- grandchildren: Andrew, Alyse, Seven, Juliana, Ella, and Evangeline.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Newton Briggs, whom he married Feb. 25, 1955, in Chautauqua, and who died Jan. 28, 2013; seven brothers: Howard, Jim, Alden, George, Herbert, Paul, and Robert; and one sister, Elizabeth Swanson.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church in Chautauqua. The Rev. Paul Womack will officiate. Burial will be in the Chautauqua Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville.
