Fredonia Tops Red Dragons

FREDONIA – The Fredonia Hillbillies (13-3, 9-0) got out to a 29-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in defeating Maple Grove, 88-60, Monday evening in Division 1 West boys basketball.

For the second time in three games, the Hillbillies came out on fire from beyond the arc as they connected on six 3-pointers in the first quarter.

The first time the two teams met, Fredonia won by just two points.

Fredonia held a 49-27 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Maple Grove’s Graham Soffel found his groove as he scored 16 of his team-high 25 points. Meanwhile, Corey Wefing added 17 points for the winners.

“Wefing is a fantastic player,” Fredonia coach Greg Lauer said “He keeps going and going. It was a good battle between him and Nick Johnston. Soffel did a nice job getting to the basket.”

Myer led Fredonia with 25 points and seven rebounds while Cam Voss scored 15 points, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Pat Moore contributed 14 points.
