JCC Men Struggle In Road Loss To Genesee

BATAVIA – February didn’t start well for the Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team Saturday night.

Having lost five of six games in January, the Jayhawks (0-7, 7-13) were looking to start on the right note this month, but Genesee CC (5-4, 17-6) had other ideas and came away with a 90-66 victory in NJCAA Region 3, Division II action.

Ervin Mitchell had a strong game for Genesee CC with 33 points on 14-of-22 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line.

Tyreek Jewell, who went over 1,000-point barrier on Thursday against Monroe CC, had 23 points on 9-of-24 from the field. The only other player for JCC to reach twin digits was Ohndo Smith with 10 points.

Naquil Jones supported Mitchell with 20 points while Alex Morris and Jason Perry-Murray added 10 points in the victory.

Redell Freeman handed out 11 assists and Perry-Murray had nine rebounds for the winners.

JCC shot 16-of-32 in the first half and trailed, 42-34. But in the second half, the Jayhawks were only 14-of-40 for 35 percent while the Cougars were hot with 19-of-33 for 58 percent in outscoring JCC, 48-32.

The Jayhawks have two road games this week with the first one at JCC-Olean at 7 p.m. on Thursday and then play at Erie CC on Saturday at 1 p.m.
