Defense Lifts JCC Women To Victory

BATAVIA -How do you explain how the Jamestown Community College’s women basketball team shot only 34 percent from the field, 13 percent on 3-point attempts, and made only 36 percent from the foul line, but still managed to pull out a NJCAA Region 3, Division II win on Saturday afternoon?

One word: Defense.

JCC (4-0, 17-5) shrugged off its offensive woes and posted a 46-45 win over Genesee CC (0-6, 5-15).

A sticky man-to-man defense held Genesee to only 13 points in the first half while the Jayhawks were piling up 24 for an 11-point lead.

”The defense has to travel,” said JCC coach George Sisson.

In the first half, Taylor Storer got two early fouls and was forced to the JCC bench.

”I just didn’t want Taylor to get three fouls in the first half and Kaylee Sheldon, Amy Sands and Corri Hannon did the job for us,” said Sisson.

The defense had to make a final stop to gain the victory as the Jayhawks missed the front end of 1-and-1 with 13 seconds left. Genesee got the ball up the court, but the shot from about eight feet away didn’t fall and the Jayhawks had withstood the dreadful night of offense.

Elle Reed had 16 points for the Jayhawks.

JCC is idle until meeting host Erie CC at 1 p.m., Saturday.
