Frewsburg Hands Cold-Shooting Fredonia Its First Division Loss

FREDONIA – The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (8-2, 6-1) shot just 15 percent from the field on Tuesday in a 33-30 Division 1 West girls basketball loss to the Frewsburg Bears (6-5, 4-1).

“Frewsburg played a tough zone defense and we struggled with it,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle lamented. “We missed layups and close shots we should make. I’m disappointed with how we played. We will go back to practice to work on it for our next game and use it to motivate us. It’s a good opportunity to see we are not there yet and have to work on a few aspects.”

Fredonia held a slim 7-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Bears responded by taking a 16-15 lead into halftime. Frewsburg increased the lead, 29-25 after three quarters and held on for the win as it was outscored, 5-4, in the final frame.

Making the loss even more frustrating was the fact it was a chance for the Lady Hillbillies to take command of the division lead.

Emilee Johnson led Frewsburg’s offense with eight points. She also added three steals. Emily Hair finished with three points, six rebounds and three assists while Maddie Whippo charted three points and five rebounds.

Hannah Cybart led Fredonia with nine points and six rebounds while Madison Abram had four points and eight boards. Kirsta Wheelock added six rebounds and three assists.
