Wegmans Celebrates Designation As 12th-Best Company To Work For

Employees of Wegmans Food Markets Inc. across the nation are celebrating what has become a nearly two-decades long company tradition.

On Saturday, Wegmans’ Jamestown location held an employee celebration in the produce section to mark the company’s 12th-place ranking in Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” listing.

Since Fortune began the listing in 1998, Wegmans has made an appearance every time; and is one of only 13 companies to do so. According to Scott Bova, perishables manager, Wegmans’ success as a top employer is a result of the family values the company instills in its work environment.

“For 17 years in a row, we’ve been on the list; and it’s a huge accomplishment,” Bova said. “It’s a highly regarded award for employers, and it’s something that we take to heart. We’re a family-run company, and the family feel trickles all the way down into all of the stores. I believe that people like to work here, and they want to work here because of those family values.”

Jason Jordan, front end manager, said the friendly atmosphere of Wegmans’ stores instills teamwork characteristics in the employees.

“It all starts with how our people care about each other, and the teamwork they show,” Jordan said. “They enjoy working with each other, and that translates to our ranking.”

Bova said the listing provides a snapshot of how the company is functioning as an employer, and employee feedback is always welcomed as a means of getting better from year to year. While this year’s 12th-place ranking is lower than last year’s fifth place, Bova said the company received the same overall performance score as it did last year.

“Competition is fierce,” Bova said. “Everyone wants to be on that top 100 list, and everyone is stepping up their game. But we’re delighted to be on the list for 17 years in a row. In addition to that, our score as a percentage didn’t change at all. Our employees still feel that we’re one of the best companies to work for, and that’s a huge celebration.”

In compiling its annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” listing, Fortune partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; with 257 firms participating in this year’s survey.

Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs, and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.

Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible. Wegmans, which was founded in 1916, currently employs more than 43,000 people.

The Feb. 3 issue of Fortune Magazine will be on sale beginning Monday.
