Frewsburg Lions Club To Meet Jan. 27
FREWSBURG – The Frewsburg Lions Club met recently in the Community Room at Frewsburg Central School. Program Chairman Jon Anderson introduced three guests: Mike Swarm, U.S. Navy veteran, and now a civilian employee at the U.S. Naval Reserve Station in Erie, Pa.; Melissa Himes, volunteer ombudsman at the reserve unit; and Sue Rowley, president of the local Blue Star Mothers.
Swarm described how his unit follows sailors and Marines from the time they are deployed until six months after they retire from service. He focused on how he makes sure that servicemen and their families and loved ones are able to communicate with one another as well as to inform them of what public services are available to them as families of servicemen.
Himes works as a problem solver and “ground level” advocate for servicemen and their families.
Rowley presented a slide show of the recent activities of the chapter and volunteers. She talked about how the chapter was organized, how they function, what their mission is, and how their work is appreciated by the overseas servicemen who are the beneficiaries of their efforts.
At the business meeting, Marty Hunt reminded members of the upcoming annual pancake breakfast to be held on Feb. 8. De Warn reported that 181 pairs of eyeglasses and two hearing aids were shipped for recycling before the end of 2013. Jerry Eklund reported on the recently completed Red Kettle Campaign for the Salvation Army.
The Tops Market location collected $6,166.45, an amount nearly equal to the highest amount ever collected at the Frewsburg location. He was especially pleased in light of the fact that this was the shortest collection period that they had experienced in several years. Lions President Robin Schroeder commended both Eklund and his wife, Norma, for the outstanding job they do in coordinating this event in the Frewsburg area. In the final business, the club presented a check to the Blue Star Mothers.
The next regular meeting will be on Jan. 27 at Frewsburg Central School.
